Serious RP. I know, most of those who hear the term serious rp aren't too keen on just having text base chat and I don't want that to ever happen on impulse. BUT. most serious rp servers rack up a bit more players than semi-serious. Which is why I'm writing about this.

Do I want it? not really. but in impulse mostly. there is generally no rp in sight (excluding GM events but that is not the point) and this has been a recurring issue for the past few servers i have been in. so what can we do? we are technically not on a roleplay base gamemode despite the name, but we can thrive on certain game circumstances and core changes. it also depends how the player base actually feels about it.

This is mainly a thought to put out there. I do not know if this was ever considered but it would have a slight improvement on player base count and uniqueness.

+1 we should enforce "IC" rules. the "RP" title has been bastardized to death that its basically a lie on most "semi serious" rp servers. this isn't "semi serious" in terms of RP there's no reproductions to OOC and breaking character in VC making this an "Anarchy" server not a "Semi serious" server.

what

Serious RP has a bit of a bad rap and for good reason, because whenever it is done, it is often TOO serious, and done with a huge emphasis on the RP, and with gameplay being completely disregard, or made "realistic" at the cost of fun.

Serious RP at its core is simply that: Taking the game and your role in it seriously, and interacting with the world and others in the world when you can. If we just enforce that approach to RP while keeping the impulse gameplay itself fun and engaging, i think you have the best combination.

The ability to build a gun to shoot cops within minutes rather then days or even weeks, while still requiring you to do more then just shout memes at eachother for social interactions.

I've always liked to think that roleplay through game mechanics, instead of /me's is more better (Think of synapse in a way)

Synapse does alot. ALOT. Of things wrong, but like it or not, i think it was the closest we've ever seen to a serious HL2RP server hitting that happy medium.

I hate its guts, its grind and lack of rebel QoL is enough to make you want to jump off a bridge and almost everyone involved is a weirdo or a straight up asshole, and you can find videos showcasing its immense corruption in 4k, but it also does some big things right that other servers should take notes on.

Totally agree on this, I played this server mainly because the people in it actually roleplayed and didn't just want combat for most of the playtime. It makes the experience more memorable and a lot more fun, usually combat focused servers get repetitive after a while and I'm glad that Astronet was always the refresher on it.

+1

Some important points to making the server serious rp THE RIGHT WAY would be:

-Discouraging OOC talk in anything but /ooc and /looc. Not instantly punishing someone for saying something OOC in character but do warn them to not let it slip too often.
-Decide on proper terms for things. So if CPs are called CPs, they won't be called CCA or MPF, especially not by other combine members. This would go well with having some sort of established lore for the server, since it's obviously not super canon to half life 2 (and obviously not trying to be, which is why having lore is important)
-Reward RP with recognition. If someone is roleplaying well, it's appropriate that they get noticed and have someone's RP be taken into consideration before going through with promotions, along with other things like competence and leadership, of course. Then they could set an example to future units under their supervision.

Things to avoid would be removing OOC chat and/or removing voice chat. OOC chat is such a great addition to server because it makes the server a lot more friendly to hang out in more casually, too. It's important to make sure people know the server will be serious rp and if they break character, simply guide them to how they can properly not break character like telling them about /looc instead of just "Yup you're banned kid, should've larped more". If someone asks ooc questions in character just tell them "/looc You should ask that kind of stuff in /looc or /ooc".

Thank you for coming to my tedtalk

Ehhhh... If you have a in game vocoder, then sure.

If not, then im not the kinda person to force people to install software they may or may not be comfortable with just for "muh immersion"
Absolutely. Not going the Synapse route and forcing people to download FL studio. Just have every CP and OTA spawn with a vocoder in their inventory that is mandatory outside of the nexus.

"in impulse mostly. there is generally no rp in sight" In what context, like a text flood of information and and actions just to pull out a handgun and shoot someone?
Or a normal in-character chit chat? If its the second one there's plenty of that, people probably just don't like you.

Well. Lets put it like this. On other servers ive been on, rebs are n word spammers, and CPs are literal children.

We are playing a half life 2 roleplaying game. CPs are meant to act like CPs. I don't want to see i3 HELIX-6969 saying LOLMFAO in text chat and some i4 repeatedly peeking around a corner with a citizen. Most OTA are good examples of how they should act, and the higher ranks of CPs appear to understand it too. But not only the high ranks and OTA are supposed to act like Combine. Anyone who's playing Combine should act like a Combine. /me's is a fine addition to spice up some interactions but that's not what this suggestion is about. It's simply to stop being OOC and start actually doing what this gamemode is about.
